Químico y físico británico. En 1891 construyó una máquina para producir oxígeno líquido en cantidad. Su frasco Dewar para almacenar gases licuados (un frasco de doble pared que tiene un vacío aislante entre las paredes internas y externas) se convirtió en indispensable para el trabajo científico sobre fenómenos a baja temperatura; su principio se utiliza en los termos. Dewar fue el primero en licuar y solidificar el hidrógeno. En 1905 su descubrimiento de que el carbón vegetal sometido a frío intenso puede ayudar a crear elevados niveles de vacío, fue de utilidad en la física atómica.
